In order to develop science skills and make the use of science kits successful in your schools, it is crucial to develop exemplary, qualified leaders in your districts. How do you decide who would be a good candidate and eventually a good trainer for your district? We recommend a variety of criteria:
- Does this person have a genuine interest in science?
- Is this person willing to learn content and engage in activities above his/her comfort level of knowledge?
- Is this person willing to learn new ways of teaching?
- Is this person excited about inquiry-based/hands-on learning?
- What is this person’s science background?
- Has this person been observed teaching the kit? How does that compare to the trainings led at TASC?
- How does this person work with adults?
There is not one right answer for assessing whether a person will be a good trainer. Although TASC trainings can teach inquiry skills and kit content, it is up to each individual to internalize those skills and use them well. Knowing your trainers and knowing how they perform are your best indicators of success.
