One School District's Experience

In 2007, NC begins End of Grade sciencetesting, grades 5 and 8—tests planned to include science process.Inquiry-based science prepares students for these tests by putting them inthe role of scientists. Figure 1 shows the results of progress made by participating students on standardized science tests in El Centro (California) School District. And inquiry-based teaching also influences testing in language arts! Figure 2 shows the passing rates on standardized writing tests for participating students. Inquiry-based teaching levels the playing field among advantaged and disadvantaged students and offers opportunities for authentic writing and math.
